ENERGY
STAR
Changing
the world starts with simple actions, like changing a light. When you
replace a light in your home with one that has earned the ENERGY STAR,
you contribute to a cleaner environment while saving yourself energy,
money, and time buying and changing lights in your home.
What
is ENERGY STAR
ENERGY STAR gives you energy-efficient choices on light fixtures, lamps,
and bulbs that prevent greenhouse gas emissions by meeting strict energy
efficiency guidelines set by the US Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) and the US Department of Energy (DOE.) Without sacrificing performance,
ENERGY STAR labeled products help consumers save energy and money, as
well as help protect the environment by reducing air pollution and global
warming associated with energy production.
ENERGY STAR
Labeled Lighting
ENERGY STAR labeled light bulbs, fixtures, and ceiling fans meet strict
energy-efficiency criteria without sacrificing performance. They are
designed to fit the style of your home or office. The ENERGY STAR label
is awarded to both hard-wired and portable fixtures, including table
lamps, torchieres, suspended fixtures, ceiling and close-to-ceiling
fixtures, sconces, outdoor fixtures, and cabinet, recessed, security,
cove, and architectural lighting. ENERGY STAR labeled fixtures generally
use compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs).
CFLs produce the
same bright light as incandescent bulbs, but use up to 75 percent less
energy. And CFLs last up to 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs.
Ceiling fans with
ENERGY STAR labels operate 40 percent more efficiently than conventional
fans, resulting in 180 kWh or about $15 per year in electric savings.

lighting provides more light while using 2/3 less energy than standard
incandescent lighting.
- The average
home is responsible for more air pollution than the average car.
- The average
household spends $1,300 each year on their energy bills. By choosing
ENERGY STAR qualified products, you can cut this by 30%, saving about
$400 each year.
- For every product
that you buy that runs on electricity, there are two price tags: the
price you pay at the time of purchase and the price you pay on your
energy bills to operate the product over time. An ENERGY STAR qualified
product may cost you more upfront, but in the long run, it is a great
investment for you and the environment.
- In 2003, ENERGY
STAR helped Americans save enough energy to power 20 million homes
and reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from 18 million
cars.
- If every American
replaced the five fixtures they use most at home (or the lightbulbs
in them) to ENERGY STAR qualified lighting, they'd save themselves
more than $60 every year in energy costs.
- If every American
household did this, together we'd keep more than one trillion pounds
of greenhouse gases out of our air. That's a $6 billion energy savings
for Americans and an energy savings equivalent to the annual output
of more than 21 power plants.
