Congratulations to the University of Maryland's Watershed, the winner of the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon

The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon challenges 20 collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency. Price Increases on Linear Fluorescent and Compact Fluorescent lamps
As a result of the Impact on Rare Earth Oxides and the extraordinary circumstances in the lighting industry, most lamp manufacturers will be implementing large price increases in the upcoming months. Affected most are compact fluorescents and linear fluorescent lamps, with most manufacturers showing an average 25% price increase for these products. These increases WILL affect not only our stock cost but contracts, DSOs and SPAs as well. Due to the uncertainty of the situation, there are also potential short-term availability issues with many of the affected lamp types. Federal Legislation on light bulbs

The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA) is phasing out the iconic incandescent light bulbs and is requiring manufacturers to replace them with new, energy efficient bulbs that comply with EISA's mandated performance levels for incandescent and incandescent halogen bulbs.

The phase-out of the general service bulbs will begin January 1, 2012 starting with the 100W. The 75W will follow in 2013 and the 60W and 40W will follow in 2014. This means you will have to use more efficient lighting alternatives. But don't worry - you have choices!

The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (HR-1424), approved and signed on October 3, 2008, extends the benefits of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 through December 31, 2013.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, lighting represents 40% of the average commercial building’s electric bill, followed by motors/HVAC (40%) and other equipment (20%). According to the Energy Cost Savings Council, energy-efficient lighting generates an average project payback period of 2.2 years and a 45% return on investment.
